The riverside Villa Mattisse is hidden away in the heart of the traditional fishing village of Seseh, just footsteps away from the beach on Bali’s southwest coast. Villa Bunga Wangi is constructed in the traditional Balinese style consisting of separate pavilions located within 1500 sq.ms of landscaped gardens, designed by the award winning landscape architect, Made Wijaya. From the Balinese entrance gates to the villa grounds, one finds oneself descending the white palimanan stone steps through the landscaped gardens to the extraordinary ten metre high main living/dining pavilion which overlooks the natural green stone swimming pool nestled adjacent to the Pangi River.

The main living and dining pavilion, with its flagstone floor, is well suited for functions, while the adjacent flat lawn is perfect for Balinese dance performances. This sizeable, 10-metre high, open air pavilion is furnished with antique daybeds, an antique wooden coffee table, large cushions and a dining table for eight. Ceiling fans ensure the comfort of the guests, sturdy pillars support the shingle roof, and a bar to one side serves as a breakfast bar or a drinks bar. The pavilion is also graced with a number of antique artifacts including an ornamental painted wall panel that forms a striking centre-piece, flanked by a pair of Javanese statues resting in softly lit alcoves.

Each of the three individual air-conditioned bedroom pavilions is a short stroll through the villa grounds and each consists of a bedroom with king size bed, balcony overlooking the gardens and spacious ensuite bathroom and private courtyard with outdoor shower.

The master bedroom is located in the sleeping pavilion known as ‘Lily’: It also possesses a balcony-style deck. Complete with a comfortable daybed and a table, the deck overhangs the garden beside the pool and the temple. Similar to the other sleeping pavilions, the bedroom is graced with a double four poster bed and also has a satellite TV with VCD/CD player. The bathroom features a cream terrazzo tub beside glass windows within walled courtyard with an open air shower.

The air-conditioned study room and guest bedroom is known as ‘Hibiscus’. This cosy room has a cool terrazzo floor and is furnished with a comfortable sofa and two arm chairs, together with a satellite TV and VCD/CD player. The room enjoys a series of glass doors, which can be completely opened up, and there is also a small en-suite shower room with washbasin and toilet. A wooden staircase leads up to a mezzanine area, abundant with natural light from the large windows, which extend upwards from the glass doors below. The timber-floored mezzanine is furnished with a double bed.

There is a lockable, connecting door leading from Villa Bunga Wangi to the villa next door. This can be opened when there is a large group sharing the two villas. There is also a spacious and secure communal car park within the walled Pangi River Village complex.

The lovely terraced garden was created by the acclaimed landscape architect, Made Wijaya, who is well known for his romantic garden designs. White Palimanan steps lead past pink hibiscus, hand carved stone statues, and a lotus pond filled with Koi fish.

At the lowest level of the garden there is a kidney-shaped swimming pool, fashioned from green Javanese stone. It is characterised by an infinity edge and is bordered by flowering heliconia, coconut palms and the Pangi River. The pool area is furnished with sunloungers and also features a thatched relaxation balé pavilion.

Located within the Pangi River Village complex adjacent to village of Pererenan on Bali’s west coast in a secluded location overlooking the rice terraces beyond the Pangi River. The restaurant and night life districts of Legian and Seminyak are only 15 minutes to the south and the trip from the Ngurah Rai International Airport to the villa is approximately 30 minutes.

Le Meridien Hotel and the famous Tanah Lot Temple are a scenic 15 minute drive to the north, as is the world renowned Nirwana Bali Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman. Our villa is called Astika Toyaning or beautiful water – well nearly. Astika means beauty, simple and minimalist and Toyaning – clean fresh water used in rice fields. Astika Toyaning is part of the Sungai Pangi Estate – a small villa complex of 8 luxury villas in Canggu set on a plot of over 120 are (12,000 sqmtrs) overlooking the Sungai Pangi river.

Astika Toyaning was completed in mid 2008 and its the total space (excluding car parking, common areas, etc,.) is nearly 1,600 sq mtr with 4 bedrooms (three double beds one twin bed); a 20 meter lap pool; 10 meter square pool; separate kitchen pavilion that seats 12 for dinner; a lounge and multimedia room.

There are loungers for 8 people around the pools as well as a Bale that sits at the end of the lap pool. The large outside living area overlooks both pools. We have three full time staff (two housekeepers and a full time cook) plus gardener, pool and security.

We finished construction nearly a year ago but have yet to formally put it on the rental market. We have stayed in it quite a lot as well as family and friends to date. It is ‘modern Bali’ in style built to western standards. We used a Australian architect and construction company

The main 2-storey building houses three of the bedrooms and is characterised by a colonnaded wrap-around Terrace and a corresponding wide wrap-around balcony on the upper floor. The terrace is furnished with a large circular table and six chairs for alfresco dining under a funky metal chandelier. There is also a bar with a curved façade, and a cushioned rattan sofa and chairs together with a glass-topped rattan table

Indoors is a large Living, Dining & Office Area, with a cool terrazzo floor scattered with Oriental rugs. Here, guests can enjoy a more formal dining experience around a solid chunky dining table for ten. The office area is furnished with a daybed, shelf units and a desk, and is equipped with a computer, Internet access, a fax machine, and a central telephone system. A guest powder room is accessed from this area. The adjacent Service Kitchen is one of two kitchens at the villa. The villa is positioned around two sides of the large 17 x 6.5 metre lap pool, which is tiled with green Java stone and complemented by a serene Buddha statue and an outdoor rainshower. Privacy and security is maintained by an encompassing garden wall. At one end of the pool is a relaxation pavilion, known as a ‘bale bengong’. Furnished with cushions, it is great for chilling out with a book or taking an afternoon nap. A small, 2-storey, rectangular, wooden gazebo, charmingly fashioned in the form of a traditional rice barn – known as a ‘lumbung’ or ‘jineng’ – with a thatched, horseshoe-shaped roof, rests in another part of the garden. The Riverside Villas are your personal Shangri-La. Set within a Balinese village in Kerobokan and surrounded by green belt rice fields, the Riverside Villas are skirted by a tranquil river that borders all three properties. The recently completed Riverside Villa 1 (RV1) is located just ten minutes from famous restaurants such as Kudeta and La Lucciola, and is positioned just within the entrance to our boutique three-villa complex.

Consisting of four bedrooms, Villa 1 has two main bedrooms in the villa itself and two bungalow bedrooms, nestled across the nearby river and accessible by footbridge. The complex is surrounded by exotic gardens and landscaping, with its own 14-meter pool with sun loungers and umbrellas to suit.

Deatailed Descriptions

Whether the name Umah di Beji (“Bath of the Gods”) refers to this five bedroom villa’s signature swimming pool, dramatic floating bathtub or the river that runs the entire length of the grounds is rather lost in the midst of time.  What is certain is that this magnificent property represents one of Bali’s finest vacation properties that was featured in a Financial Times article regarding luxury villas in Bali.

Accessed via its own 150 metres driveway and bridge, Umah di Beji enjoys a most secluded location amongst the padi (rice) fields.  The villa itself is set in a picturesque location, with gardens forming a natural amphitheatre. Various buildings, all with traditional Balinese alang-alang (thatch) roofs, frame the gardens and house the five king-sized suites.  The mature garden and numerous water features range down towards the dramatic, lava rock swimming pool.

Umah di Beji is a magnificent, tranquil property of exceptional visual appeal.

In fact, the size and design of the grounds provides for many secluded seating areas making this villa the perfect location for large groups of friends or family to congregate together or enjoy private holiday time.

A large pavilion houses the main living space; an elongated open-air living and dining room with the enclosed kitchen at one end.  With room to easily accommodate a twelve-seat dining table, centred below a gorgeous teak chandelier, and an eclectic mix of sofas and easy chairs, you begin to get a sense of impressive scale.  Complimentary antique pieces from Lombok and tasteful modern wall hangings combine to create an ideal location for entertaining large or small groups of guests.  The state-of-the-art kitchen is usefully located directly off this area so staff can easily serve and clear.

An informal dining bale (Balinese gazebo) complete with a dining/games table and daybed is positioned atop the river bank, and makes the ideal spot for afternoon drinks and quiet repose.  The sound of slow flowing water from the river below and the dancing of bamboos in the breeze provide a natural serenade.  A massage bale, just in front, completes the ensemble.

The master suite is enclosed in a private structure at the edge of the property, with a wooden deck atop the riverbank and a comfortable daybed from which to treasure this natural retreat.  The interior of the suite is the epitome of modern Chinese luxury, housed beneath a high, dramatic ceiling displaying the intricate craft of alang-alang.  The room is dominated by an enormous bed that is headed by a full-length floral wall hanging framed by dark teak beams and a beautiful example of Chinese ceramic work.  Overlooking the river is a corner lounge area with soft furnishings and a study room, featuring an impressive vase collection set in built-in wall boxes and a striking golden Buddha lamp.

In keeping with the overall style of the villa, water plays a key role in the opulent design of the ensuite bathroom.  The focal point is a teak bale housing a sunken Kerobokan stone bathtub flanked by male and female Pembantu (helper) statues.  A rectangular lotus pond with stepping stone access surrounds the bale.  At night, with candles, you almost feel like you are floating amongst the lilies as you soak away a hard days relaxing!  There is also a shower room, a completely enclosed lawn area for private sunbathing and a separate decked bale, ideal for Ti Chi or meditation.

The second and third bedrooms share an outdoor lounge with natural furnishings and immaculate gardens.  Both rooms also boast private terraces, including a breakfasting terrace in the third bedroom.  The white washed rooms host examples of Indonesian batik designs and stamps.  The second bedroom has a mosquito-canopied king-sized bed mounted on a teak platform and lavished with layers of white cushions.  The third bedroom is of similar design with twin beds. Sandwiched between the Oriental glass doors of the bedrooms and ensuite bathrooms, are dressing rooms with sunken square basins.

The fourth bedroom has a sumptuous four-poster bed and the interior design combines a mixture of woods and natural fibre furnishings.  The structure housing bedroom five has ornate Balinese carved doors, a private seating deck overlooking the river valley and the rice terraces beyond.  Furnishings include a teak four-poster and an antique mounted Javanese topeng (mask) set on the writing desk.

All bedrooms benefit from ensuites which are among the best examples of all fresco bathrooms.  Each boasts a sunken stone bathtub and gargoyle showers within a private garden where you can indulge the senses in a warm shower under a star-filled evening sky.

All bedrooms are equipped with VCD players and sound systems can be found throughout the living and dining areas.  The master bedroom boasts a DVD player.

The deep 15m x 5m infinity edged pool rises against the falling slope for dramatic effect.  Lava rock stone tastefully blends into the garden surround and is fronted by a smaller pool complete with gargoyle fountains that resemble the royal hot springs found elsewhere in Bali.  A wooden sundeck reaches back from the poolside towards the boundary river below.  Patterned pathways, throughout the landscaped grounds, lead to many delightfully secluded spots and examples of both Buddhist and Balinese Hindu statues.
